The Crucible

Arthur Miller's modern classic is a profoundly disturbing vision of human nature, steeped in themes of paranoia and persecution, jealousy and revenge. Set amidst the backdrop of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, the play still speaks clearly to issues close to the heart of all human interactions today-- the desire to appear 'normal' to one's peers, the tendency to deny responsibility for one's own actions and their consequences, and to look outside oneself when tragedy befalls. The frightful ease with which concepts like 'honor' and 'truth' lose their meanings will serve as a reminder to us all to reject the status quo, and be brave enough to stand up for what each of us believes is right.
